(4). (12). Date: December 22, 2009.Weeks before, all I would read on the various hip hop sites about this new Jay Electronica/Just Blaze track about to drop. It was so much hype around this track it was crazy. I haven’t listened to Jay Electronica before but when I heard he was with my favorite producer I knew he had to be something special because JB dont fool with no slacker. So from there, I downloaded and listened to all the J.
Electronica tracks I could find and I was seriously impressed. Talk about coming out of left fieldman man man. Me, I love music that makes you think.that food for thought type music so he was right down my lane. When I first got Jay Electronica’s ElectroChemical mixtape I was kind of skeptic about his songs.
The structure was not your typical hook, verse, chorus, verse. He was definitely a different type of artist, his songs included poetry and filmography that was twisted in a way. Like dude has sample from Charlie & the Chocolate factory on his tape, from the end of the movie. I’m not quite sure what he is trying to do here but this format is present throughout the mixtape.
I’m addicted to his intro track “Abracadabra” it’s a smooth combination of soul, funk, & spoken poetry. You can hear the honesty in his voice and that always wins when it’s embedded into an artist’s music. I’m so glad that he used Dilla’s – Gobstopper track to rhyme over. In all sense if you listen to ElectroChemicals it is very similar to Dilla’s “The Shining”.
The interruption of the movie samples, which kind of fill in as adlibs. Both present the same atmosphere as the one that exists in a poetry club with a lite mist of ciggerette smoke. Like you witnessing the spoken truth about someone’s life which parallels as a documentary and the instrumental acts as scores to a movie. Peep this joint.
